The Positive or The Negative.
The Past, The Present, or The Future.
Within your control or Out of your Control.
The Potential or The Risk.
The Beauty or the Imperfections.

Only in very rare moments, when we have the time to sit back and digest, are we capable of seeing the truth of the whole. We are almost always restricted by what we focus on- itโ€™s automatic.

This has a very real impact on outcomes. Focus on the negative, and watch the outcome veer in that direction.

Consider what would happen if you flip your focus to the other side.

  1. I think about this a lot. I have a sign in my home office that simply states, “You are responsible for the energy you bring into this space.” What isn’t written is “Your energy will dictate the amount of time you spend here.” One of the greatest lessons of a recent health drama is the importance of positive energy to healing, the true illusion of control that many high-functioning people ascribe to and the utter freedom of surrendering to the present. I wish I had a better grasp of these things at your age. Embrace the wild uncertainty, that’s where the good stuff is and where the bad energy of comparing ourselves to others or, worse yet, the unrealistic plan/picture we carry in our head can’t survive.

    Just a thought ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Responsibility for your energy- I like that. You can’t place the blame elsewhere, it is within your control.

That freedom of surrendering to the present and being honest about the utter lack of control you have is so hard to really grasp. You can know it, but living by it is a whole separate deal. It must take years.

      • It does take time and practice even though this quote is wrongly attributed to Lao Tzu I still think it rings true:
“If you are depressed, you are living in the past. If you are anxious, you are living in the future. If you are at peace, you are living in the present.”
